March Shiner Bite Producing Big Okeechobee Bass

Spawn season on the Big O delivered — wild shiners around the grass and pads produced quality largemouth and a few trophy-class fish this month.

Conditions

March is prime time on Lake Okeechobee, and this month lived up to it. We’ve been right in the heart of the spawn, with waves of big females moving shallow on the warming trends and the moon phases. Lake levels have been favorable, the south-shore grass and pad fields are loaded with fish, and water clarity has been good in the areas we’ve focused on. When the weather has cooperated, the shallow bite has been excellent.

The Bite

This is the time of year that brings anglers from all over to chase a Florida trophy, and the wild shiner bite has been the star.

  • Drifting and staking out live wild shiners along Kissimmee grass, pad edges, and reed lines has been deadly. Big spawning females simply can’t resist a frisky native baitfish in their living room.
  • We’ve seen several trophy-class largemouth come to the boat this month, along with steady numbers of solid keepers — exactly what you hope for during the spawn.
  • For clients who wanted to cast, flipping soft plastics and creature baits into the heavy stuff produced quality bites, and there’s been a fun early topwater window before the sun gets high.

What Worked

The pattern has been straightforward but effective: get on fresh, productive shallow cover early, present lively shiners patiently, and be ready when the cork goes down. Cold-front days slowed things and pushed fish a little deeper into the cover, but the bite bounced right back on the stable, warming stretches. The biggest fish came on shiners worked tight to the heaviest grass and pads.

Looking Ahead

The spawn will continue to wind through the coming weeks before fish transition to post-spawn and start feeding up on the outside grass. The cooler-month trophy window is closing as we head toward summer, so if a giant Okeechobee largemouth is on your bucket list, now is the time. Reach out and let’s get you on the shiner bite while it’s hot.
