Fellsmere / Headwaters Lake

By-request trips to Fellsmere Headwaters Lake and the Stick Marsh area — one of Florida's premier big-bass destinations in Indian River County.

Fellsmere & Headwaters Lake

Few places in Florida generate as much big-bass buzz as the Fellsmere area. Headwaters Lake (the Fellsmere Water Management Area) and the nearby Stick Marsh / Farm 13 system in Indian River County have built a national reputation as trophy largemouth factories. These are managed, nutrient-rich impoundments full of submerged timber, grass, and structure — exactly the kind of habitat that grows giant Florida-strain bass in a hurry.

I run trips here by request. It’s a fantastic option for anglers based on the Atlantic side of the state, or for those willing to travel for a real shot at a fish of a lifetime.

A Big-Bass Destination

What sets Fellsmere apart is the size potential. Since these waters were flooded and stocked, they’ve produced numbers of trophy-class largemouth that draw anglers from across the country. The standing timber and dense vegetation create ambush cover everywhere you look, and the fish use it.

When we fish here for bass, we’ll typically focus on:

  • Working live wild shiners through timber lanes and grass edges
  • Flipping and pitching plastics into heavy cover
  • Throwing topwater, swimbaits, and reaction baits during low-light windows

This is technical, cover-heavy fishing, and it rewards patience — but the payoff can be the biggest bass you’ve ever held.

Don’t Sleep on the Bluegill

It’s not all about bass. The same fertile water that grows big largemouth also produces excellent bluegill and panfish, especially around the warm-season full moons when the bream move onto their beds. A light-tackle bream trip here is a blast and a great way to keep kids and beginners busy with steady action.

Seasonal Notes

The big-bass bite peaks in the cooler months, roughly from late fall through spring, when fish stage and spawn shallow. Winter and early spring are the classic windows for trophy hunting on wild shiners. As the water warms, early-morning topwater and frog fishing turn on, and the bluegill bedding gets going from spring into late summer.

Getting There

Fellsmere sits in Indian River County in east-central Florida, inland from the Vero Beach / Sebastian area. For anglers staying along the Treasure Coast, it’s an easy run, and it pairs well with a multi-day Florida fishing trip. Because these are by-request outings, please reach out ahead of time so we can line up dates and access.
