Saltwater in the Florida Keys
The Florida Keys are a saltwater angler’s paradise, and they’re a perfect change of pace from chasing largemouth on the Big O. From skinny-water flats to bluewater offshore, few places on earth pack so many world-class fisheries into such a small stretch of coastline. I run Keys and bay trips by request, with seasonal availability — so if salt water is on your wish list, reach out early and we’ll find the right window.
What makes the Keys unique is the geography. You have the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other, separated by a thin chain of islands and connected by bridges and channels. That means a short run can put you on completely different water and completely different fish, often in the same day.
Three Kinds of Fishing, One Trip
Depending on the season, the weather, and what you want to catch, a Keys trip can cover inshore, nearshore, and offshore styles.
Inshore & the Flats
The shallow flats and backcountry bays are home to some of the most exciting light-tackle and fly fishing in the world. Sight-fishing the flats for species like bonefish, redfish, snook, and tarpon is a true test of skill and a thrill when it comes together. The backcountry also offers protected water on breezy days.
Nearshore & Patch Reefs
Just off the islands, patch reefs and hard bottom hold a steady mix of fish. This is dependable, fun fishing — great for families and anglers who want bent rods and good eating. Expect species like snapper and grouper, among others, in relatively calm, accessible water.
Offshore & Bluewater
Run out past the reef into the deep blue and the game changes again. The Gulf Stream pushes in close here, putting pelagic species within reach. Depending on the season, that can mean mahi (dolphin), sailfish, and other bluewater targets — fast, hard-pulling fish that make for an unforgettable day.
Species You Might Target
The Keys offer an incredible variety. Across the flats, reefs, and bluewater, anglers commonly chase:
- Inshore / flats: tarpon, bonefish, redfish, snook
- Reef / nearshore: snapper, grouper
- Offshore / bluewater: mahi-mahi (dolphin), sailfish
Exactly what’s biting depends heavily on the season and conditions — part of the fun is matching the trip to the time of year.
Planning a Keys Charter
Because these are by-request and seasonal trips, the best approach is to reach out well ahead of time with your dates and what you’d like to target. We’ll talk through whether inshore, nearshore, or offshore makes the most sense, and build a day that fits the conditions and your goals. Half-day and full-day options are available.
